I have always said that Nature’s Touch is years of love and graft, a stubbornness of refusing to allow my children to spend their life suffering because of limitations in healthcare and chronic conditions.
In 2018 I was extremely lucky to have given birth to a beautiful baby boy, a boy that would end up the true inspiration to Smiley Miley Skincare. The beautiful newborn bubble that I was told about by so many quickly became a fantasy more than our reality.
From 2 weeks old we saw significant changes in him and it was clear that there was going to be allergies as well as significant eczema. At two weeks old Miles was prescribed Topical Steroid Creams and sent on his way.
After 8 weeks of fighting based on mum gut, we were finally listened to and told he may have allergies and started the process of getting tested. This is not a story of my frustrations around healthcare but more of the pure exhaustion of trying to find out what is wrong with your baby who is unable to tell you how they are feeling.
At this point we had been seeing a dermatologist every month for nearly 6 months - monthly antibiotics as well as stronger and stronger steroid creams with very little change. I will always remember our last visit and having yet another antibiotic prescribed asking her ‘What are these antibiotics for?‘ only to be received by a shrug and an ‘honestly I do not know, I don’t know what else to do!’
His skin was getting worse, his comfort was getting worse and was generally unwell what felt like every day. Tired and at our whits end, avoiding most food groups we finally went to see a very well known consultant in the world of allergies and eczema Dr Adam Fox. Here things rolled along very quickly, seeing specialists and finally seeing a specialist dermatologist.
Finally, a break, some relief…. Unfortunately not.
We left the very confident and assured dermatologist with yet more Topical Steroid Creams, some of the most potent on the market for a 8 month old as well as Protopic (an immunosuppressant for an already immunosuppressed child.)
After a year of trying these creams, no sleep, me giving up my job as a nurse to ensure he was looked after I snapped.
My son skin was purple from the Protopic, he looked like a burns victim and was getting snubbed with disgusted looks in public.
When Miles was 18 months old I had enough, what I had trusted in was just not working for him and was just getting worse. Thinking it couldn’t get any worse I stopped giving him ALL medicated creams that day and started the healing process of Topical Steroid Withdrawal, after all it couldn’t get much worse right?
The next two and a half years were years is suffering, but mostly learning. We learnt how to navigate life without the support of medicated creams, we learnt that very little of eczema healing is actually to do with creams And more about the body itself.
There were many days I questioned my decision to move away from conventional medicine when it came to skin and allergies but my husbands trust in me kept me going and I do not regret it at all.
So what has this got to do with Nature‘s Touch you ask?
Well 2 things came out of TSW
1. My 5 point plan to support and navigate the needs of an Eczema child [and adult]
- By compartmentalising thoughts I was able to ensure a holistic approach to Miles‘ needs
- This is something I use to support other families and led to A Balance Between Medicines being the start. A non- profit support platform that I am extremely proud of
2. Working through Miles’ skin I learnt bout the different stages of his skin condition and how using only active ingredients would have a positive reaction to his healing.
Over the past 4 years I have been supporting Miles STEROID FREE with homemade skincare alongside other complimentary therapies.
After supporting others and with lots of encouragement I have decided to share all my research and products to the world in hope to give parents some relief or an eczema sufferer some comfort and some level of healing.
From this, Nature’s Touch was born featuring Smiley Miley Skincare [Named after our own smiley Miley]. If this story resonates with you or sounds familiar, stick around and find your hope.
